[September Events] Celebrating Abundance & Traditions: Autumn Festivals & Seasonal Flavors in Kyushu
Thank you for visiting the Maizuru Kitchen blog!
As the scorching summer heat subsides, autumn arrives in Kyushu—a wonderful season to enjoy nature's bountiful harvests and seasonal cuisine.
In autumn, we do not merely enjoy rich ingredients; it is also a time when historic traditional events and festivals take place across various regions to give thanks for nature's blessings and life.
Today, we would like to introduce three fascinating Kyushu events taking place in September that are well worth visiting.
1. Hakozakigu Hojo-ya Festival (Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture)
~Cherishing All Living Beings: A Major Kyushu Festival Announcing Autumn's Arrival~
-
Dates: Mid-September (September 12–18 every year)
-
Location: Hakozakigu Shrine (Hakozaki, Higashi-ku, Fukuoka City)
-
Official Website: Hakozakigu Shrine Official Website
As a cherished autumn tradition in Hakata, "Hojo-ya" is a festival centered on the philosophy of "cherishing all living things, refraining from killing, and showing gratitude for the autumn harvest"—a message deeply meaningful to us in the culinary world.
Hundreds of food stalls line the main approach to the shrine. Artisans sell handcrafted glass objects called "Chanpon" (Vidro) that produce a pleasant cooling sound. Visitors gather to purchase the local specialty "Oshioi-mochi" (rice cakes) and freshly harvested young ginger, filling the town with the festive air of autumn.
2. Yame Fukushima Lantern Puppets (Yame City, Fukuoka Prefecture)
~Over 270 Years of Heritage: The Enchanting Beauty of Traditional Craftsmanship and Mechanical Puppets~
-
Dates: Late September (Around Autumnal Equinox Day)
-
Location: Fukushima Hachimangu Shrine Grounds (Motomachi, Yame City)
-
Official Website: Crossroad Fukuoka (Fukuoka Tourism Web)
Designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan, this traditional event has continued for over 270 years since the Edo period. Held in conjunction with the autumn pilgrimage of Fukushima Hachimangu Shrine, intricate mechanical puppet plays (karakuri ningyo) are dedicated on a beautiful two-story pavilion stage erected within the shrine grounds.
Showcasing delicate mechanisms unique to Yame—a city famed for its traditional artisan crafts—the harmonious blend of intricate puppet movements and traditional musical accompaniment creates a mystical world perfectly suited for welcoming the autumn season.
3. Akizuki No-shi-no-Hina Doll Festival (Asakura City, Fukuoka Prefecture)
~Praying for Health & Longevity on Choyo Festival in a Historic Castle Town~
-
Date: September 9 (Choyo Festival / Double Ninth Festival)
-
Location: Around Nagayamon Gate, Akizuki Castle Ruins (Akizuki Akatori, Asakura City, Fukuoka Prefecture)
-
Official Website: Asakura City Official Website
Known as the "Little Kyoto of Chikuzen," Asakura City's Akizuki holds the "No-shi-no-Hina" festival on September 9th for the "Choyo Festival."
Derived from an ancient custom of displaying Hina dolls again in autumn to air them out while praying for good health, longevity, and protection from misfortune. Around 600 beautiful Hina dolls arranged neatly along the stone steps leading to the Nagayamon Gate at the Akizuki Castle ruins offer a breathtaking view. Visitors can deeply experience Japan's elegant seasonal culture alongside the historic atmosphere of the castle town.
